Assessing professional competence through immersive, practice-based evaluation.
Preparing future hospitality security staff for the realities of their profession requires more than written examinations alone. SVH sought an assessment method that better reflects day-to-day practice — one that is realistic, fair and closely aligned with real-world decision-making.
An interactive 360° VR examination pilot was developed in close collaboration. Instead of answering questions on paper, candidates were immersed in recognisable hospitality scenarios. Wearing a VR headset, they were placed directly within operational situations, facing the pressures, dilemmas and choices typical of the profession.
The production included:
Script development based on real-life experiences from the field
Casting and direction of actors with industry backgrounds
8K 360° film production, enhanced with spatial audio for full immersion
Editing and optimisation in collaboration with TNO, responsible for developing the VR application
For vocational hospitality students, a new form of examination emerged — one that reflects the true complexity of the role. The VR exam assessed not only theoretical knowledge, but also practical judgement: handling pressure, reading situations and making split-second decisions.
With this pilot, SVH took a significant step towards more innovative, realistic and effective training and assessment methods. Technology became a means to make craftsmanship visible, tangible and assessable within hospitality education.
